I love to talk with groups---never to—about how good writing can advance careers, and how to move from bad writing to good.

Presenter of Seminars/Workshops and Lecturer

"My seminars and workshops are natural spin-offs of my teaching for more than 20 years at three universities in Pittsburgh, and of my writing for businesses of many stripes and sizes for more than 30 years. I’m not at all surprised when attendees have consistently told me that their time with me gave them skills that they put to creative use that and every other day; I’m an experienced and successful practitioner so I teach what works in the world of commerce. I don’t know any other way." —Pete Geissler

"I definitely improved my writing and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed my two days with Pete."
—Justin Crapps, Mechanical Engineer, Center for Advanced Vehicular Design,
Mississippi State University

"Terrific, fast-paced, useful, on the mark. What more can I say?"
—Dianna Knepper, Training Manager, KTR-Tator Consultants

I suppose there’s a little bit of showoff in every lecturer, which helps to create an interesting ‘show’ and prevent a dull ‘tell’. Are birds and humans so different? View Showoff at wesssmith.com.

The complete course of eight sessions, each four hours, that covers everything needed to be a better writer and speaker:

  • The Building Blocks
  • More Blocks for Your Building
  • Still More Arrows for your Quiver
  • Up Your Hit Rate with Reports, Proposals, and Letters that Sell (Softly)
  • The Devil's Lurking in the Details: Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics
  • Go Ahead, Tell It Like It Is: Critical Reading and Editing
  • Just About Everything You Need to Know
  • Let’s Look At Your Stuff

Each module stands alone: select one, several, or all.

• Reports, Proposals, and Letters that Sell (Softly) is a concentrated eight hours that will show you how to add punch and persuasion to those critical marketing documents. Included is a discussion of the psychology of persuasion, and careful evaluations of actual documents written by managers and others.

• Marketing Communications examines, in eight hours, the four basic techniques for creating all marketing communications that work, then evaluates several examples that we can applaud and decry. It’s fun, and useful too.

• Creative Writing for Engineers and Scientists isn’t an oxymoron; instead, it exposes attendees to techniques that can add interest and flair to text that too often is boring and pedantic. During a lively eight hours, I expose attendees to a dozen techniques and before-and-after documents that are graded worst and best, explain why they are, and suggest improvements.
